Preamble
Public confidence is central to democratic legitimacy
India's democracy is founded on the principles of free, fair, transparent and credible elections. The right to vote is one of the most important democratic rights of every citizen, and confidence in the electoral process is essential for preserving the legitimacy of elected governments.
A section of citizens, political parties, constitutional experts and civil society organizations has raised concerns about transparency, verifiability and public confidence in Electronic Voting Machines. The movement states that elections should not only be fair, but should also be seen to be fair by every voter.
It therefore advocates, through peaceful and constitutional means, for a review of India's voting system and for the restoration of manual ballot paper voting.
